Tree & Shrub Care
Your trees and shrubs need care just as much as your lawn does. The tree and shrub program from Think Green Lawn Service consists of seven treatments throughout the year to protect them from insect and disease damage, make them more drought resistant, and give them a better look and deeper color with fertilization.
- Round 1 January - February: Dormant oil application is applied when plants are dormant to control hibernating pests such as scale insects and certain insect eggs.
- Round 2 February - March: Fertilizer is applied to the root zone of all landscape plants to stimulate the growth of vibrant, healthy foliage.
- Round 3 April - May: Plants are individually treated to provide control of insects such as leaf miners, caterpillars, and lace bugs as well as diseases such as leaf spots, rust, scab, and leaf galls.
- Round 4 May - June: Control of summer insects such as weevils, mites, and beetles are provided. Disease control for any lingering leaf disease and powder mildew is provided.
- Round 5 July - August: Control of summer insects such as mites, aphids and caterpillars as well as diseases such as scab, blight, and teal spot are treated.
- Round 6 September - October: The landscape receives close monitoring at this time as insect and disease problems spread rapidly. Both insects and diseases are treated as needed.
- Round 7 November - December: It is important at this time to stimulate root growth and energy needed for next springs green up.
Core Aeration
Lawn aeration, also known as core aeration, is the process of removing small soil plugs or cores from your lawn. Core aeration is usually recommended to help fight soil compaction on heavily used turf and limit the buildup of excess thatch. There are numerous hand aerators on the market, but most lawn aeration is done mechanically with a core aerator, which has tines mounted to a disk or a drum. A core aerator removes small cores of soil that are usually 1/2 to 3/4 inches in diameter. The holes left in your lawn from core aeration range from 1-6 inches deep and are usually spaced anywhere from 2-6 inches apart. Some aerators thrust solid spikes into your lawn without removing a core. This process is known as spiking; and it can further contribute to compaction.
Benefits:
- Improved air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
- Enhanced soil water uptake.
- Improved fertilizer uptake and use.
- Reduced water runoff and puddling.
- Stronger turfgrass roots.
- Reduced soil compaction.
- Enhanced heat and drought stress tolerance.
- Improved resiliency and cushioning.
- Enhanced thatch breakdown.
